The Olympics may be over, but some of the Olympic icons will be around for many years to come. Most people would have seen at least some of the XXIX Olympiad over the past 2 weeks, but you may not be aware that you have been looking at one of Fast Flow's most prestigious projects, the Beijing Olympic Stadium, better known as "The Bird's Nest". With a construction cost well in excess of US$500M and a worldwide audience, the designers, Olympic organizers and the Chinese Government saw this as a very important feature for the country and the games.
Proving to be a very complex roof design, our team of highly qualified and experienced engineers put forward a number of options to the architect for consideration. A range of criteria had to met such as buildability, aesthetics, system performance and budget to mention a few. With a number of other Siphonic companies vying for the project, the architects were very impressed with the range of options and possibilities that Fast Flow could offer and had no hesitation is awarding us the contract. A complete "section by section" design was complete, loaded into a presentation and forwarded to the architects for checking. Negotiations were conducted with regard to layout, pipe routing, and materials selection, with the final decision being a complete Stainless Steel system.
The Architect was obviously highly impressed with our Siphonic option seeing a vast improvement in both buildability and the overall aesthetics of the systems. The complexity of a conventional system for this size project was immense and the advantages that were available by installing a Fast Flow Siphonic system were obvious.
With this project having such a high profile and the construction industry in China "buzzing" with Olympic fever,
it gave Fast Flow an opportunity to put forward proposals and secure a number of other projects in the area being built specifically for the Olympics
such as the CCTV Tower and the Beijing airport.
